Discovery was the treasure at the end of the rainbow this morning!

Join us in celebrating Karen Hayden and Melissa Short, two incredible Project Lead the Way teachers at Discovery Intermediate, who were awarded an Innovative Teacher Grant from the Goddard Education Foundation.
Their groundbreaking project, “Hydroponic Lab: Growing Your Future,” will bring the exciting world of hydroponic gardening right into their classrooms. This project will create a hands-on, experiential learning journey that bridges science, technology, and sustainability in a truly unique way.
Students will dive into soil-less cultivation, learning about plant biology, essential growth elements, and the impact of environmental conditions - all while fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork.
“Our goal with the hydroponic lab is that it fosters a deeper appreciation for sustainable practices and food sources, empowering students to make informed decisions about their health and environment,” shared Mrs. Hayden and Mrs. Short. “ Ultimately, this hands-on approach encourages curiosity and a lifelong interest in science, setting the foundation for future academic success.”
This project will engage 5th-grade students with the Kansas State Science Standards and will measure success through student goals, data collection, reflective journals, and group presentations. It’s a true investment in our students’ educational growth.
Thank you, Mrs. Hayden and Mrs. Short for your innovative approach to engaging students in a fun way in your Project Lead the Way Classrooms. We are excited to see these incredible opportunities come to life at Discovery Intermediate School.
